This book is describes a ten-year housing development of eight energy-smart houses in water-wise gardens in the Goldfields of northern Victoria, Australia. Sue Turner and her partner, Don Wild, at retirement age took on the enormous task of making their vision real. They wanted to create houses that had small energy footprints due their design and orientation, and they also wanted to have gardens of indigenous Australian plants that both increased community interactions through their design while minimising water use, because drought is common and temperatures can be extreme in both summer and winter.
The book contains photos of the many Australian indigenous plants that form the communal street frontage and gardens and lists the native birds that have been observed in the gardens over the past ten years.
'This housing development hasn't been imposed on the landscape. Rather, it's a place where a community can live happily. It's a garden to be shared and shows what you can achieve if you have a vision.' Sue Turner.
